My first visit to the Great Central Railway in nearly two years came in Whit-week 2017, when i treated myself to a short stay in South Derbyshire. Having made a quick trip to Peak Rail the previous day (see separate video), i headed to Loughborough on Wednesday to check out the locos in action that day. My main reason for visiting the GCR was to see newly-restored BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 78018 in service. Steaming for the first time since the 60s in October 2016, 78018 is a special engine to me as it was built and mostly overhauled in Darlington. The final stages of reconstruction were undertaken at the GCR's Loughborough Works, under the agreement that it would be based at the railway for the duration of its first boiler ticket (although it did spend the Winter season on the Nene Valley Railway). In this video, we take a trip behind the Standard Mogul along the full length of the line from Loughborough Central to Leicester North. Also running that day was LMS Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 46521 in BR Brunswick Green. I hope you all enjoy the video. Special Thanks to the crew of 78018 for allowing me a footplate ride during the run-round at Leicester. Feel free to comment and subscribe!
