LNER Gresley A3 60103 'Flying Scotsman' made a triumphant and glorious return to service in February 2016, and crowds all over the world flocked to Britain to see the world-famous icon back in active service. Although usually clad in its instantly-recognisable LNER Apple Green, the decision was taken for 60103 to return in BR Brunswick Green livery, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway was the first preserved line to host the reborn pacific. I decided to try out some new locations on the eighteen-mile route prior to the line's 'Branch Line Steam Gala' in May. Upon arriving at Levisham at around 08:30, i learnt that a short drive away from the isolated station was Platelayers Cottages, where the first shot was taken. Old-favourite Moorgates is seen from two different angles as locals and tourists all catch a glimpse of the famous engine. Grosmont was a hive of activity all day and the 'Scotsman' is seen ruling past the MPD on a return journey. However, the best shot is the final. Standing at the top of Esk Valley, where i would normally film at ground level, we see 60103 tackle the 1 in 49 gradient with an eight-coach train unassisted (All services had been backed by either 76079 or 45428 until this point). Also running alongside the A3 was NYMR residents LMS Stanier Black 5MT 4-6-0 45428 'Eric Treacy' and BR Class 37 37264 top-and-tailing, and BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0 76079 providing baking duties on the first two services. It was an incredible day and trains were packed out all day as the world's most famous steam locomotive thundered up and down the moors. 'Flying Scotsman'...is back!
