60009 'Union Of South Africa' is my favourite of the preserved LNER A4s, partly because it was the first Gresley Pacific i ever saw in steam, rushing past me at full cry on her old stamping ground. Owned by Scottish farmer John Cameron, she entered the heritage sector in the 1970s and apart from overhauls and routine maintenance, she's hardly ever been out of action. However, age comes with a price and a series of multiple defects have scuppered 60009's operations in recent years, resulting in far more sporadic appearances. These appearances will be stopped altogether in July 2019 when at the end of her boiler ticket, The A4 (and Cameron's other locomotive, LNER K4 61994 'The Great Marquess') are to be permanently housed in a purpose-built museum honouring their owner. Railway enthusiasts everywhere are devastated, but realise there isn't much we can do. So now is our last chance to get out there and experience 'Union Of South Africa' in her full glory. UK Railtours' 'The Talisman' was chartered by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and was originally due to be hauled by LNER A1 60163 'Tornado'. However, after a significant mechanical failure on the mainline, the A1 has been stabled at the Nene Valley Railway for repair ever since. The A1SLT therefore asked the crew of 60009 to step in for the run up to Newcastle, the first time any streak has been seen up this way for several years! In this video, the action is covered at York and Northallerton, where 60009 is seen arriving (with a very near miss) for a short water stop. After which, we race ahead to Northallerton to watch the A4 accelerate through on her journey to Newcastle. I hope you all enjoy the video. Feel free to comment and subscribe!
