The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust's LNER Peppercorn A1 Pacific 60163 'Tornado' was withdrawn from service in October 2014 for winter maintenance and was due to be back in service by May the following year. However, with the A1's boiler not having returned to the UK from Germany until April (rather than the anticipated late February/early March aim) and several other niggles being discovered during the overhaul meant that 'Tornado' would miss her first mainline specials. She was booked to operate 'The Cumbrian Fells Express' on 30th May but was replaced by BR Standard 7MT 70000 'Britannia', as well as the trust's own 'White Rose' railtour, which ended up being cancelled altogether. As well as the general overhaul, 60163 would also be repainted into her familiar BR Apple Green livery, which was finally shown off when she finally returned to steam at Darlington Locomotive Works on Wednesday 10th June. Having made a couple of short test runs at Darlington, the Peppercorn Pacific was moved to Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon for further tests and running in to be carried out. I arrived on Saturday Afternoon expected the A1 to be shuttling up and down the museum's short stretch of running line, but instead she was confined to the platform. It wasn't until 16:10 that 'Tornado' eventually began to roll, much to the delight of the large crowd of spectators. I had to be somewhere else by 17:00, so i could only film a couple of scenes, but planned to return the following day. In my video, 60163 'Tornado' is seen running up and down the demonstration line at Shildon accumulating mileage and showing off her new Apple Green livery. She is viewed from a variety of points with many whistles to be heard as well. The A1 remained at Locomotion until Wednesday 17th, when she underwent her mainline light engine test run from Locomotion to Millerhill Depot, in preparation for a series of railtours in Scotland (see separate video).
